Mental Health Matters
In just a few weeks we’ll present our 28th annual performance — a joy-filled, inspiring celebration of creative expression — and we’re all so excited to be back on the big stage!
It’s fitting that our event happens in May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month. Many of our EXYO youth struggle with mental health issues, and in the three years since our last in-person performance, the mental health crisis amongst children and teens has reached alarming rates. According to the Children’s Hospital Association, the first six months of 2021 saw a 45% increase in the number of self-injury and suicide cases in 5- to 17-year-olds, compared to the same period in 2019.
That’s a sobering statistic, and it reminds us how important our being there for our youth has been. We’ve reached thousands of at-risk youth over the last three decades. Through our unique arts immersion programs, kids tap into their own creativity and in that process find acceptance, connection, and confidence.
After being away from the big stage for two years in a row, we can’t wait to share the culmination of our work together! Please join us at 7 pm on Thursday, May 26 at the Boch Center – Wang Theatre for an unforgettable evening of Pure Kid Joy!
