Underwater Self-Expressions
Inspired by the oil painting of Samantha French, Exyo teens created large scale multi-media underwater self-portraits. Youth explored a rich variety of artistic mediums and techniques to re-create light, darkness and dimension in portrait.
Youth began by finding a gesture or pose while immersed in water, illustrated on clear-lay film with permanent marker incorporating water color and white oil pastel to capture sunlight’s reflection. They embraced the playful qualities of floating underwater and swimming, resulting in personal portraits that are bold self-expressions of color and fluid joy.
